Green Tea is my favourite hot drink. I drink a cup every morning in the office, and after lunch on most days.
Did you know?
Drinking a cup of green tea everyday can help you to burn an extra 70 calories per day?! It will also boost your metabolism and reduce your appetite.
Green tea benefits were discovered 4,000 years ago and since then has been considered a wonder drink! Polyphenols, and particularly its subgroup called catechins, are responsible for most of the health benefits of green tea.
Antioxidants
Catechins are considered the most effective of all antioxidants. The antioxidant levels of green tea is hundred times more effective than vitamin C and twenty-five times better than vitamin E in protecting our immune systems.
Health benefits of reen tea antioxidants
- Eliminating free radicals within the body / detoxify the body
- Absorbs and blocks cholesterol
- Helps prevent heart related conditions within the body
- Works to normalise blood pressure levels
- Helps to fight bacteria and viruses
- Slows the ageing process
- Can assist in weight loss (see below)
Green tea and weight loss
There is strong evidence that green tea has fat-burning properties and promotes weight loss, especially when combined with increased physical activity and a healthy diet.
Green tea helps by:
- Increasing the metabolism of fats by the liver (thermogenic effect)
- Inhibiting lipase (fat absorption enzyme) in the digestive tract
- Providing a feeling of satiety and fullness
An indirect weight-loss benefit of green tea is that if you drink it instead of coffee or other beverages, and you can save on the extra calories. Green tea still has caffeine, so it can wake you up in the morning without all the milk, sugar, chocolate, or whatever else goes into your coffee.
Though recommendations vary, generally 3 to 5 cups of green tea a day is considered optimal for losing weight.
